Through comprehensive psychoeducational testing, our psychologists measure cognitive, academic and behavioral functioning. We provide families and teachers with a better understanding of a young person's abilities.
School can be fun, engaging and full of new opportunities. But school also can be stressful. Juggling many subjects, homework, and peers is hard enough. Adding teachers, extracurricular activities, and the demands at home can be a full time job for students. Some students thrive under pressure while others have a tough time balancing it all. But for the struggling student, school can be overwhelming. As a parent, watching your child struggling in school is hard. Not understanding why can feel like an even bigger mountain to climb. Let us help.
Reasons your child may be struggling in school:
Trouble keeping up with school work
Difficulty paying attention
Difficulty understanding and learning new material
Slower to understand new concepts and problem solve
Difficulty decoding reading material
Poor memory for learned information
Overwhelmed by the amount of school work
Trouble getting started or procrastinating
Bored at school
Misbehaving in the classroom
Difficulty with social skills or fitting in with others
Psych-Ed Testing in Maryland can Help Answer your Questions
Evaluations at Thinking Tree Psychology are more comprehensive than typical school assessments used to determine qualifications for school services. School-based assessments may focus on academic development or achievement alone. But evaluations with our psychologists focus on understanding the complete picture of your child’s brain development. We diagnose learning, attention, and behavior disorders in the context of the whole child. Psych-ed testing has a number of benefits as well (read our comprehensive blog post about the 5 Benefits of Psychoeducational Testing).
Examples of concerns and diagnoses we can explore:
Learning Disorders
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Attention and executive functioning disorders (e.g. ADHD)
Slowed processing
Poor memory or recall of information
Challenges keeping up in the classroom
Gifted cognitive abilities
Evaluations are available for children and young adults. We serve ages 5 through 30. Clinicians will evaluate adults older than 30 on a case-by-base basis. So be sure to inquire if you are an adult interested in services. In addition to testing, educational consultations are available. This includes attendance at IEP/504 meetings, as well as team building for school-home collaboration.
The Thinking Tree Psychology Approach to Psychoeducational Testing
Thinking Tree psychologists have helped hundreds of families gain a better understanding of their child’s behavior and learning in school and at home. Through comprehensive testing, we create a unique profile of your child’s areas of strength and weakness. We can also help you understand what that means for treatment. This means providing recommendations for interventions which can be obtained both within and outside of the school system. Our clinicians believe in a collaborative approach to evaluation. We work as a team with teachers, therapists, medical providers and parents. We want your child to reach his or her full potential.
Dr. Perlis describes her approach to psych-ed testing:
“Comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations provide a broad lens with which to understand the complex interaction between an individual's unique combination of thinking, learning and interpersonal styles and their environment. This is often essential, not only in terms of identifying effective educational accommodations and approaches for each student but also to promote an individual’s capacity for self-awareness and self-advocacy.”
Dr. Ko describes her approach to evaluations:
“My approach centers on the belief that each child possesses unique strengths and challenges, so I tailor each assessment to each child’s specific needs. To understand the whole child, I incorporate insights from multiple sources/perspectives when possible—including the child, parents/guardians, and educators—ensuring a comprehensive understanding of each child's developmental profile. Ultimately, my goal is to offer realistic and practical recommendations that foster each child's optimal growth and development.”
Focus areas in your child’s psychoeducational evaluation may include:
Attention and concentration
Behavior and emotional functioning
Cognitive and intellectual abilities
Fine-motor coordination
Executive functions (life tasks) such as organization and planning
Language and language-related processing
Learning and memory
Problem solving skills
Social skills
Visual and nonverbal information processing
